I struggle with words when anxious or tired and generally find it easier to process my thoughts and emotions through visual art. Every shape and color choice has some significant representational meaning. I tend to use contrasting colors to emphasize the differences between the tangible, immutable elements of being and the fluidity of thoughts and emotions. I use darker colors to represent physical space, obstacles, or beings while the brighter colors represent feelings, inner thoughts, and auras. In these paintings, there are themes of queer love, love of nature and animals, self-growth, and Caribbean and Louisiana culture.

Roundabout

I love repetitive patterns and concentric circles seemed like fun to try. I also drafted this years ago but finally am trying to get back in touch with my 'perfectionistic" side. I did add one that's different to appease my rebellious side, haha. See if you can spot it!

Tropical Thoughts on Sanity

Growing up in Jamaica I often processed my teenage angst through poetry. These words were the primary themes, along with nature, of my writings.

Bear

Change/Growth

Boundaries

In order for our light to shine in a chaotic world we need to get good at protecting our peace through setting strong boundaries with ourselves and others.

In the foreground over the hourglass are two dangling cloth earrings with three overlapping blue diamonds with a yellow dot in each center, there are also red frills on alternating sides of the diamond.

Cuban Awakening

My first crush happened when I was on a school trip to Cuba at 11 years old, thus the use of the colors of the Cuban flag. While I painted the piece my thoughts turned to how the sun powers all life and there is an hourglass made of DNA as nothing lasts forever due to the passage of time.

The upper third of the background is blue feathers while the lower two thirds is a tan basket weave pattern. In the foreground is a shield in the shape of an upside down teardrop, purple with a black edge. There is a symmetrical pattern on the shield with two yellow lines each side, overlapping Ls with the ninety degree angle bend facing the center where there is a stream of red drops of blood increasing in size from the top to the bottom of the shield running below the shield.

Blood and War

Inspired by the Kenyan flag where the red represents the blood shed in their war for independence. It also has references to absence of life in the form of menstruation. In the background is an interlocking basket weave pattern next to a bed of blue feathers.
